Why Do the Best Schools Focus on Character?
Originally written in Korean. Now with a Vietnamese translation.
This book draws heavily on the examples of character education being practiced at Phillips Exeter Academy, as witnessed directly during our four years of teaching at this prestigious boarding school. Phillips Exeter Academy is known worldwide for its prestige and excellence. In this book, we argue that Exeter’s strength lies in its emphasis on character education, to balance “goodness” and “knowledge” as championed by John Phillips who founded the school.
The book is divided into five parts, starting with introductory Part 1. In Part 2, we discuss the discussion-based pedagogy at the Harkness Table and focus on its positive effect on collaboration and process-oriented thinking. In Part 3, we discuss the importance of co-curricular activities such as arts and athletics. In Part 4, we discuss the lessons learned in the residential halls and through community service. In Part 5, we discuss how the school’s administrative systems such as teacher involvement in governance and admissions process also support the community-wide ethos of character education.
